Unfortunately, most consumers do not realize that there are potential liabilities and major tax consequences when they make such arrangements.

  • When a family hires a private caregiver, you become an employer, therefore you are responsible for ALL payroll taxes and employee withholding. This includes state and federal payroll taxes, social security, medicare, federal and state unemployment. It is illegal not to pay taxes on employees wages.
